Join us for a distinctive programme inspired by our feathered friends, as we journey through music shaped by the legendary Charlie “Bird” Parker!
The BMG Stradophonics presents: Swing with Strings! This is a richly atmospheric concert celebrating the enduring melodies of the Great American Songbook. Inspired by the iconic recordings of Charlie “Bird” Parker with strings, the programme blends the intimacy of the jazz club with the colour and sweep of the concert hall.
Internationally acclaimed tenor Anando Mukerjee joins leading UK saxophonist and arranger Julian Nicholas and the Bernardi String Ensemble, directed by Stradivarius violinist Andrew Bernardi, for an evening of expressive song, lyrical improvisation, and luminous orchestration.
Classic standards by composers including George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin and Duke Ellington are presented in both celebrated and newly created arrangements, combining the rhythmic vitality of jazz with the warmth and depth of a string orchestra. Don’t miss a special performance of White Storks, a striking string octet by Helen Ottaway, commissioned to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Shipley Arts Festival.
The result is a programme of elegance, swing, and cinematic atmosphere – where jazz and classical traditions meet in a sophisticated and engaging live performance.
