Sing with Strings presents ‘Beware the Mackerel Sky’ a smugglers’ folk opera!
Join us for an exciting evening with the Bernardi Music Group, in collaboration with the Yehudi Menuhin School and Lancing College, as we reveal ‘Beware the Mackerel Sky’. This folk opera, created by Christopher Hussey, Theresa Gooda (inspired by Charlie Olsen’s book), and with lyrics by Charlie Olsen, is set to be a memorable musical experience.
Harmony in History: The Lancing Chapel Folk Opera
Enjoy this show at Lancing College Chapel, the world’s largest school chapel. It’s a mix of history and fiction, featuring over 400 performers, including choirs from Lancing College, the Yehudi Menuhin School, and other Sussex schools, coming together for a musical event.

‘Beware the Mackerel Sky’ is more than just a performance. It tells a story of smugglers and spies from early 19th century Sussex. Set in Shoreham and Lancing, it’s a tale of conflict, mystery, and emotion. With a full string orchestra and professional singers, this one-act folk opera is a historical adventure brought to life with music and storytelling.
